Predicting bear and bull stock markets with dynamic binary time series models

چکیده
Despite the voluminous empirical research on the potential predictability of stock returns, much less attention has been paid to the predictability of bear and bull stock markets. In this study, the aim is to predict U.S. bear and bull stock markets with dynamic binary time series models. Based on the analysis of the monthly U.S. data set, bear and bull markets are predictable in and out of sample. In particular, substantial additional predictive power can be obtained by allowing for a dynamic structure in the binary response model. Probability forecasts of the state of the stock market can also be utilized to obtain optimal asset allocation decisions between stocks and bonds. It turns out that the dynamic probit models yield much higher portfolio returns than the buy-and-hold trading strategy in a small-scale market tim-

Bull, bear or any other states in US stock market?
a r t i c l e i n f o Keywords: Markov switching model Optimal number of states S&P 500 returns A stock market is traditionally considered to shift between bull and bear markets, reflecting the states of high mean and low mean in stock returns, respectively. In this paper, we attempt to detect more different states in a stock market by applying a Bayesian Markov switching model, where the optim...
متن کاملClustering financial time series: New insights from an extended hidden Markov model
In recent years, large amounts of financial data have become available for analysis. We propose exploring returns from 21 European stock markets by model-based clustering of regime switching models. These econometric models identify clusters of time series with similar dynamic patterns and moreover allow relaxing assumptions of existing approaches, such as the assumption of conditional Gaussian...

In this study, 3 models of Time-Varying Parameters (TVP), Dynamic Model Selection (DMS) and Dynamic Model Averaging (DMA) and a comparison with the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method in MATLAB in the time period 2003-2013 (with data on a monthly basis) are discussed. In the present study, the variables of unofficial exchange rate changes, interest rate changes and inflation in oil price foreca...
متن کاملDuration Dependence in Stock Prices: An Analysis of Bull and Bear Markets∗
This paper investigates the presence of bull and bear market states in stock price dynamics. A new definition of bull and bear market states based on sequences of stopping times tracing local peaks and troughs in stock prices is proposed. Duration dependence in stock prices is investigated through posterior mode estimates of the hazard function in bull and bear markets. We find that the longer ...
متن کاملModelling of Indian Stock Prices using Nonhomogeneous Poisson Processes with Time Trends
The financial sector in India has undergone radical reforms, particularly in the stock market segment, since early 1990s. Testing duration in stock markets concerns the ability to predict the turning points of bull and bear cycles. This article study some point process models to fit the data from Indian stock market cycles. We have considered the BSE 30 (SENSEX) data from January, 1991 to Augus...
